Champions League 3rd Round Draw
Dinamo Tbilisi may face the champions of Romania or Macedonia.
The draw of the Third Qualifying Round to the Champions League was made officially. The interest of Georgians was over Dinamo Tbilisi, the home champion side that leads the Second Qualifying Round match up against the Faroese EB Streymur by 6-1.
Despite the smashing victory in Tbilisi, the Georgians can’t hold on for returning game on Faroe Islands. The result somehow conceals many irregularities showed by the side.
If Dinamo Tbilisi manages to hold the difference and qualifies to the Third Qualifying Round, they will face a very strong team – the winner of the tie between Romanian Steaua Bucaresti and Macedonian FK Vardar.
The Romanian team won 3-0 in Bucaresti last week, but they still have a dangerous visit to make to Macedonia.
None Georgian side has ever faced a Romanian or Macedonian team in Champions League, but Dinamo Tbilisi already knows what is to face a Romanian side on European tournaments.
In the UEFA Cup 1987-1988 the Georgians faced Victoria Bucaresti and made it thru them drawing in Tbilisi 0-0 and winning away in Bucaresti 1-2. In the return of Dinamo Tbilisi to the UEFA Cup in 1994-1995 campaign the Georgians eliminated again another Romanian team, this time it was Universitae Craiova. Dinamo won both matches, 2-0 home and 2-1 away.
One season after it, on UEFA Cup 1995-1996 the other candidate - Macedonian FK Vardar - faced Iberia Samtredia and won 3-0 on aggregate.
The last time a Georgian and a Macedonian team faced each other was on the Intertoto Cup campaign 1999. Georgian Kolkheti Photi lost 4-2 away to Cementarnica Skopje, and was devastated home by 0-4.
Steaua Bucaresti and Romanian sides in Europe - last seasons - serious contenders
It’s not a secret to consider a possible Dinamo Tbilisi vs. Steaua Bucaresti a very attractive match. Two strong sides with long history since the soviet period. Nowadays Steaua Bucaresti is placed between the 50 best clubs in the world due to IFFHS (they were 36 on 1st March, 2013).
The last three Champions League campaigns had the champions of Romania in the Group Stage. In 2010-2011 CFR Cluj qualified, the next campaign 2011-2012 it was Otelul Galati, and in 2012-2013 again CFR Cluj, a team that Dinamo Tbilisi faced the last month in a friendly match and finished with a draw.
Steaua Bucaresti played the last campaign in the Europe League Group Stage, they eliminated Lithuanian Kaunas in the Play Off round by 5-0 on aggregate, and even won the Group E with 11 points, standing over German Stuttgart, Danish Copenhagen and Norwegian Molde. In the Round of 32 teams, Steaua eliminated the glorious Ajax from Netherlands – they lost away 0-2 and managed to win 2-0 in the returning match, finally from the penalty spots the Romanians won 4-2.
Steaua was eliminated by Chelsea in the Round of 16. The Romanians won 1-0 in Bucaresti but the side from London qualified with a 3-1 victory in the answer match. The English side was at the end the winner of the Europe League campaign.
This is a fact that Steaua Bucaresti is a very strong team and if they will face Dinamo Tbilisi, the Georgians will have to fight really hard to make a serious impact.
