Premier League 2013/14
Dinamo Tbilisi will face Tottenham Hotspur
Unlucky but attractive draw for the Europe League Play Offs, Dinamo Tbilisi will face the powerful English “Spurs” Tottenham Hotspur.
The current Georgian Champions are going to face Tottenham Hotspur for the Europe League Play Offs, after 40 long years of their first official meeting.
Dinamo Tbilisi, team that recently lost against Steaua Bucaresti in the Champions League Third Qualifying Round, joins the Europe League to hold the hopes to make a huge step to this prestigious European tournament’s Group Stage. But the next rival is almost unbeatable.
The team waiting for Dinamo Tbilisi is the newcomer of the Europe League, the English Tottenham Hottspur, the side with the higher coefficient of this League. The team from London has the step due to their achievement as 5th place of the Premier League last season.
Due to transfermarkt the total market value of the “Spurs” is 303.500.000 Euros, while for Dinamo Tbilisi 10.725.000 Euros. Somehow the Georgian side could be better compared with the Tottenham U21, whose value is 6.850.000 Euros.
The first match will be played on the Boris Paichadze National Stadium in Tbilisi the next August 22th, while one week later, on 29th, the returning match will be on the White Hart Lane Stadium, in London.
Georgian Teams vs. English Teams
The first official match between a Georgian and an English team was in the UEFA Cup 1973-74 season. That year the upcoming rivals faced each other for the first time, Dinamo Tbilisi against Tottenham Hotspur. Dinamo had eliminated already two strong rivals, Slavia Sofia and OFK Beograd, and managed to draw agains the “Spurs” in Tbilisi 1-1. But the returning match in England was devastating; Georgians lost by 5-1 and were eliminated.
But Georgian whole time winner team took the revenge, in the Cup of Champions (Champions League) of 1979-80 Dinamo managed to eliminate the powerful FC Liverpool. The Georgians lost away 2-1 but destroyed completely the English champions in Tbilisi by 3-0.
One year later, in the 1980-81 UEFA Cup’s Winners Cup, Dinamo Tbilisi eliminated another English grand, this time it was West Ham United. Georgians won away by 1-4 and with a relaxing returning defeat by 0-1 not serious to make it to the next round. That year Dinamo Tbilisi won the Cup’s Winners Cup of Europe and the former rival FC Liverpool won the Cup of Champions, the match between both sides for the European Super Cup was never played due to irregular reasons. The fact is about this two teams being in the spots 1 and 2 of the official IFFHS world’s club ranking.
The last confrontation between teams of these countries was in the UEFA Cup 2004-05 Group Stage, Dinamo Tbilisi played away to Newcastle United and was defeated by 2-0.
The current Georgian champion, Dinamo Tbilisi, is the only Georgian club that has faced English teams in official European tournaments.
